Budgeting for Props

Jennifer Sneider Updated by Jennifer Sneider

After your production has been set up in Continuity, you're ready to create your Budget!

Use the Product Switcher to navigate to Budgeting. This article highlights the ways you can Budget for Props.

Note: Budgets are specific to department and episode (if you are set up like a traditional episodic), so be sure to select the appropriate episode from the Episode Selector.

The Budget summary automatically updates as you input amounts, creating a running total in the blue bar in the top box.

There are two tabs for different types of Prop Budgeting: By Scene and By Category.

Once all Props have been budgeted for, budget for any miscellaneous expenses on the Misc Budget tab.

Budget By Scene

Props that exist in a Scene in Continuity automatically populate in the Budget under that Scene header. Props that are not assigned to a Scene populate under the No Scene Assignment header.

Add the Budget amount for each Prop in the box in line with the Prop.

Assign each Prop an amount in the first Scene it appears. If the Prop is used in future Scenes or episodes, an icon indicates it has already been budgeted for. Hover over the icon to see where it was previously budgeted.

If a Prop is removed from a Scene in Continuity, it is automatically removed from the Scene in the Budget.

Pro Tip: Creating or adding a Prop to a Scene in the Budget will add the Prop to the Scene in Continuity.

Add an Existing Prop to the Budget and Scene Continuity

  1. Type the first few letters of the Prop name in the Add or Create Prop box, then select the Prop from the dropdown.
  2. Add the Budget amount in the Price box. If the Prop was budgeted in a previous scene, this field is not editable.
  3. Click the blue (+) next to the Price box.

Create a New Prop in the Budget and Add to Scene Continuity

  1. Type the name in the Add or Create Prop box.
  2. Add the Budget amount in the Price box.
  3. Click the blue (+) next to the Price box.
Note: If you create a Prop in the Budget, only its name will appear in Continuity. To add additional details to the Prop, switch to Continuity and edit the Prop information.

Budget By Category

If you prefer to Budget by Category, click the By Category tab.

Props assigned to a Category in Continuity automatically populate in the Budget under that Category header. Props that are not assigned to a Category populate under the Uncategorized header.

Add the Budget amount for each Prop in the box in line with the Prop.

If a Prop is removed from all Scenes in Continuity, it still exists in the Budget Category.

Pro Tip: Creating or adding a Prop to a Category in the Budget will add the Prop to the Category in Continuity.

Add an Existing Prop to the Budget and Continuity Category

  1. Type the first few letters of the Prop name in the Add or Create Prop box, then select the Prop from the dropdown.
  2. Add the amount in the inline Price box.
  3. Click the blue (+) next to the Price box.

Create a New Prop in the Budget and Add to Continuity Category

  1. Type the name in the Add or Create Prop box, then select "Add _____" to create the new Prop.
  2. Add the amount in the inline Price box.
  3. Click the blue (+) next to the Price box.
Note: If you create a Prop on the Category tab in the Budget, only its name and Category will appear in Continuity. To add additional details to the Prop, switch to Continuity and edit the Prop information.

Removing a Prop from the Budget

Hover over the name of the Prop and click the (x) that appears to remove the Prop from the Scene in the Budget. This removes the Prop from the Scene but does not affect Continuity or the overall Budget total. You will now find the budgeted Prop at the bottom of the Budget in the No Scene Assignment area. If you want to remove the budget amount from the Prop, you must manually update it.
