Budgeting for Costume

Jennifer Sneider Updated by Jennifer Sneider

After adding all Characters and Changes in Continuity, you're ready to create your Budget! Use the Product Switcher in the top left-hand corner to navigate to Budgeting. This article highlights the various ways you can budget for Characters.

Note: If you are working on a traditional episodic, make sure you select the appropriate episode from the Episode Selector, as Budgets are episode-specific.

Create a Budget

The first time you navigate to Budgeting, verify the Characters you want to budget for. By default, the system selects all Characters that exist in Continuity.

To remove Characters from the Budget, deselect the box in line with the Character name. When ready, click Start Budgeting

The Budget summary automatically updates as you input amounts, creating a running total in the blue bar in the top box.

Note: Any Characters or Changes added in Continuity after creating the initial Budget must be manually added to the Budget.

Budget for Principal Characters

Budget by Character, Change, Item, or a combination of the three, depending on the level of detail you want.

Note:The Budget page always defaults to the Principals tab.

Budget by Character

Budget for a Character by entering the amount in the Character Total box in line with the Character name.

Note: If a Character is added in Continuity after the Budget is started, click (+) Add Character & Changes to Budget in line with the Character name to include the Character in the Budget.

Budget by Change

Budget by each Change by entering the amount in the Change Total box in line with the Change. Make sure to check the box next to Sum Changes beneath the Character Total to accurately update the overall Budget.

Note: If a Change is added in Continuity after the Budget is started, click (+) Add to Character Budget in line with the Change to add the Change to the Budget.

Budget by Item

To get even more detailed, Budget by Item. Click Add Item in line with the Change to create and budget for the Items. Make sure to check the box next to Sum Items beneath the Change Total to accurately update the overall Budget.

Note: Items that exist in Continuity do not transfer to the Budget, and Items created in the Budget do not transfer to Continuity.

Budget for Background Characters

Once you've budgeted for Principal Characters, click the Background tab to view your Background Characters in the Budget.

Just as with Principal Characters, you can Budget by Background Character, Change, or Item.

If budgeting Background as one line item, you can remove all Background from the Budget and create a custom Budget line for Background. Click (+) Create New and input the Background Name and Budget.

Note: If you see a Background Character that doesn’t exist in Continuity appear in your Budget, that means a new Character Line Item was created in the Cost Report. A new Character in the Cost Report automatically populates the Background Character tab in the Budget.

Remove a Character from the Budget

To remove a Character from the Budget, hover over the Character name and click the X that appears next to the name. The Character appears greyed out to reflect their removal from the Budget. You can always add them back later, but you will need to reenter their Budget.

Pro Tip: If a Character is removed from the production and you don’t want to see them greyed out in the Budget, remove the Character from Continuity.
